Assistant Caretaker

Salary: £12.85 - £13.05 per hour
Location: Widnes

 

Are you a hands-on, reliable, and community-focused individual looking to make a difference in your local area? HBC is seeking an enthusiastic Assistant Caretaker to help maintain and manage our library facilities, ensuring they are safe, clean, and welcoming for the public and staff.

Main Purpose of the Role:
To assist in providing a comprehensive caretaking service that ensures our libraries are fit for purpose and meet the needs and aspirations of our community.

Key Responsibilities:
As an Assistant Caretaker, you will:

  • Assist with minor repairs and janitorial tasks, such as replacing light bulbs.
  • Support emergency evacuations, including fire alarm and bomb alert responses, and conduct weekly fire alarm tests.
  • Help set up rooms for meetings, seminars, and events.
  • Patrol library grounds to ensure appropriate use, including litter picking and gritting paths during icy weather.
  • Transport and deliver goods between library buildings, occasionally collecting items from external suppliers.
  • Take utility meter readings as required.
  • Assist cleaning staff by removing rubbish bags to designated bins.
  • Carry out inspections of vacant library buildings.
  • Patrol library car parks, manage entry, and issue parking violation notices when necessary.
  • Help with general cleaning and tidying of library premises.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, commensurate with the role.

About You:
We are looking for someone who is:

  • Practical and adaptable, with basic repair and maintenance skills.
  • Physically fit and able to carry out manual tasks, such as moving furniture.
  • Reliable, punctual, and capable of working both independently and as part of a team.
  • Friendly and approachable, with good communication skills.
  • Committed to providing excellent service to the community.
